The Sandakan Bus Station is a large building that, on the day we visited, felt quite empty, with a lot of unused space. One could easily imagine it bustling with activity on busy days. Getting service was straightforward. Tung Ma bus was operating our route that day, and they had their own stand in the station.
We had a tour scheduled in Deramakot Forest that would pick us up from Telupid, so we needed tickets from Sandakan to Telupid. We initially tried to book our tickets online using the Redbus App but found no availability for our desired day. Our kind Grab driver, Ranger, advised us that the app may not always be accurate and offered to purchase our bus tickets first thing in the morning before picking us up for the trip to the bus station. This thoughtful gesture epitomised the warm nature of the people in Sabah.
The next morning, tickets in hand, Ranger arrived at our hotel on time for the bus station trip. We also needed to plan what to do after the tour and quickly decided to visit Kota Kinabalu, primarily to see Mount Kinabalu and the blooming Rafflesia.
At the station, we secured our second set of Tung Ma bus tickets. The process took a bit longer due to a brief power outage that initially hindered ticket issuance, but it was resolved quickly.

We had to buy tickets from Sandakan to Kota Kinabalu, as booking directly from Telupid to KK wasn't possible. We calculated our bus arrival in Telupid based on our tour schedule, which stated we would be there by 10 AM. Therefore, we needed the 9 AM bus from Sandakan, expecting to reach Telupid around 11:30. Unfortunately, we missed this slot because our tour in Deramakot Forest ran later than scheduled, resulting in us forfeiting this ticket. We eventually found another bus operating from Amin Jaya Restaurant in Telupid.
